Feng Shui, literally “wind” (feng) and “water” (shui), is the Chinese name for the practical art of creating positive energy flow between people and their environments. In essence, it is the belief that where you place things, the colors you choose and the objects you surround yourself with can dramatically affect your quality of life. Judith Wendell of Sacred Currents shares her advice for creating a bedroom using feng shui methods. To achieve marital bliss, try incorporating her tips into your existing or new bedroom.

The Door: The door is your frame of reference for the rest of the room. It should be in one of three positions: Knowledge, Career, or Helpful People (see map)

• Make sure your bedroom door is unobstructed and swings freely; this permits energy to flow into your bedroom, allowing your relationship to flourish. It also symbolizes open and clear communications between you and your partner.

• Position the bed so that you have a clear view of the door without being in line with its path. This usually means that the bed is diagonally across from the door.

• If the bed must be in the direct path of the door, suspend a round faceted glass crystal from the ceiling to help disperse the oncoming Chi (Chinese word for energy).

The Bed: The bed is a significant area for a good marriage and should be treated with care.

• To ensure a solid relationship, you need a solid headboard. A headboard symbolizes a protective mountain at your back. It also acts as a unifier of the relationship—two acting as one. Wrought iron or open lattice headboards will not work.

• For a balanced relationship the bed must also be balanced by having equal access on both sides. Each side of the bed should have a night table and lamp and should always be uncluttered.

• Your box spring should be of one piece—undivided. Otherwise, an energetic ‘split’ occurs over time.

• The area under the bed should be free of all clutter except for things relating to the bed, like bed linens, or maybe an empty suitcase (whatever is under the bed symbolizes that you are sleeping under the influence of that thing). Having clutter underneath the bed also interferes with proper circulation, which is considered unhealthy and interruptive.

The Room: The SW or back right hand side of the room represents marriage, partnership, romance and nurturing. Here are some tips for this important area:

• Incorporate healthy plants as a symbol of your growing relationship.

• To strengthen this area, adorn the space with pictures of the two of you, fresh flowers, and candles particularly in the colors red, white or pink.

• You may want to include an oval or round mirror as a symbol of unity and wholeness in your relationship.

Color

• When choosing colors for your bedroom, think in terms of terracotta and shades of pink; these colors are associated with joy, love, and romance. Be advised that the color peach is not considered a stable one for a long lasting relationship.

• If pink is not your preference, try using either light green or light blue; these colors represent hope, cultivation and growth.

• Newlyweds desirous of ensuring marital bliss should use red or pink sheets. If this does not fit your personal taste, try putting a red sheet on the underside of the mattress (next to the box spring). Red is considered a particularly auspicious color. It connotes happiness and sensuality, and acts as a protector.

Start to recognize that everything holds a vibration and potential meaning. In this way you can put the meaning you want into your bedroom and marriage; use symbols and energy flow to fortify your relationship and guide you on your path towards marital bliss.
